Cristo Rey High School Sacramento:
part of the national network of Cristo Rey high schools

Now numbering 22 nationwide, the model originated in Chicago in 1996, when members of the Society of Jesus sought ways to fund Catholic educations for those unable to afford traditional Catholic high school tuition structures.  And the idea was born:  Cristo Rey students would work one day per week in the professional community.  Not only would they gain valuable social and interactive skills, their salaries would enable them to pay tuition.  While annual Catholic high school tuition hovers around $10,000, Cristo Rey tuition is about $2,500, which then may be further reduced based upon family income.

Profoundly inspired and encouraged by Bishop William K. Weigand, launched by official announcement to Catholic School educators at a meeting at All Hallows in February 2005, and welcomed by All Hallows and St. Peter parish leadership and then-pastor Rev. Rodolfo Llamas, Cristo Rey Sacramento eventually opened in Fall 2006 after a Feasibility Study (sponsored by the Jesuits) determined that Sacramento met all criteria for placement of a Network school.  (For a copy of the Feasibility Study, download PDF here.)  Cristo Rey Sacramento is the only Network school sponsored by three Congregations:  the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, and the Sisters of Mercy.  It is one of just two Network schools to present a full interscholastic athletic program:  the Cristo Rey Saints.  Cristo Rey High School operates at the site of the former St. Peter Parish School.
